I’m afraid of Steely Dan. Steely Dan makes me nervous.
To me all their songs sound like it’s really late at night, the wrong part of the night, 3 am. Nothing good happens at 3 am.
It’s 1977, and you are at an overlook viewing the lights of L.A., and you are sitting on the hood of a massive car, like a golden brown Crown Victoria.
And the cocaine was bad. You’ve got the paranoid teeth-grinding twitches.
I have no idea why Steely Dan songs paint such a detailed and dire picture in my mind.
By a fever! And the only prescription is more Ron Mael!
Sparks-Tastic
Just finished reading ‘Sparks-Tastic’ by Tosh Berman.
My summary:
1. He says the song ‘Madonna’ refers to an 80’s urban legend about Madonna pulling guys off the street and into her limo for sex. I never heard that urban legend about Madonna before;
2. He discusses the remarkable phenomena of a Sparks song you didn’t really notice earlier suddenly becoming your favorite Sparks song. This happens to me regularly with Sparks songs, and only with Sparks songs;
3. He refers to Ron Mael’s ‘Viennese’ quality, and I heartily concur;
4. He tells a wonderful ghost story about his childhood home. And I love a good ghost story!
He writes beautifully, he loves Sparks, and he loves his wife. What’s not to like?
Although I will quibble about one point - I don’t think of Sparks fans as “obsessed”!
